Guatemala City, by Lincy Rodríguez -AGN- On International Women’s Day, a significant event occurred at the Palacio Nacional de la Cultura, where outstanding women were honored with the Orden de Excelencia Laboral [Order of Labor Excellence].

President Bernardo Arévalo, Vice President Karin Herrera, and Minister of Labor Miriam Roquel chaired the ceremony as part of the Ministry of Labor and Social Security initiative.

The Orden de Excelencia Laboral [Order of Labor Excellence] is awarded to women who stand out for their dedication, effort, and courage in the workplace. This award is carried out through a selection process led by a qualification board that chooses 25 women. On this occasion, Virginia Laparra, former prosecutor of the Special Prosecutor’s Office against Impunity -FECI- in Quetzaltenango, was the outstanding woman selected by the President.

An example of strength and tireless fight

Virginia Laparra becomes a model of strength and inspiration for all women, demonstrating a tireless fight for a better country. Her story highlights the courage to be an advocate and the need to ensure that nobody is persecuted for doing the right thing.

During the commemorative ceremony, Minister Roquel highlighted this day’s importance to women’s struggles in their plurality. Statistics reveal that women in the labor field represent 51%, 42% have job opportunities, 31% have a formal job, and only 9% hold management positions.

The award of the Orden de Excelencia Laboral [Order of Labor Excellence] seeks to promote development in the workplace and recognize women as agents of change.

This commemorative ceremony highlights the importance of providing opportunities and recognition to outstanding women, contributing to equity, and strengthening women’s participation in the labor market.

In this context, Virginia Laparra stands as a symbol of overcoming and persistence, recalling the importance of recognizing and celebrating the achievements of women in society and the workplace.
