Guatemala City, by Lincy Rodríguez -AGN-. Guatemala hosts a workshop to update the country’s achievements at the 28th Conference of the Parties -COP28- in a continuing effort to address the challenges of climate change in the agricultural and livestock sectors. The initiative seeks to highlight the progress and strategies implemented to mitigate the impacts of climate change on agriculture and livestock.

The Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, and Food -MAGA-, Maynor Estrada, participates in this important workshop. He is joined by key representatives from MAGA’s Climate Change Unit, the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, and the German Cooperation in Guatemala. Their presence demonstrates the multi-sectoral commitment to address environmental challenges.

Approach

  • Adaptation
  • Mitigation
  • Strengthening of skills

This workshop aims to provide relevant information on adaptation, mitigation, and strengthening skills in the linked sectors. Participants share experiences and knowledge acquired during COP 28, focusing on successful practices implemented to counteract the effects of climate change on agriculture and livestock.

A highlight of the workshop will be the presentation of Guatemala’s commitments made at COP28. These commitments go beyond declarations and translate into tangible actions aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions, protecting biodiversity, and strengthening the resilience of agricultural communities in the face of extreme weather events.

Moreover, it promotes an open dialogue among participants, allowing them to discuss current challenges and propose innovative solutions. Therefore, the exchange of ideas between government, civil society, and international cooperation will strengthen the implementation of effective and sustainable measures.

Agricultural sector relevance

This workshop’s importance lies in its direct impact on the future of the Guatemalan agricultural sector. The decisions and strategies outlined here will influence the resilience of rural communities, food security, and long-term environmental sustainability.

The workshop Actualización de los logros alcanzados por Guatemala en la COP 28 (Update on Guatemala’s achievements at COP 28) is a platform for sharing knowledge, establishing commitments, and promoting tangible actions in the fight against climate change. Guatemala shows its continued commitment to a sustainable future in which harmony between agriculture and the environment is achievable.
