Guatemala City, by Yuliza Muñoz -AGN- The Patio de la Paz of the Palacio Nacional de la Cultura was the stage for a ceremony in which the Executive Branch reaffirmed its commitment to protect the victims of human rights violations.
As part of the celebration of the National Day of Dignity for Victims of the Internal Armed Conflict, the Presidential Commission for Peace and Human Rights -Copadeh- presented the National Plan for the Dignity of Victims, which, as of today, begins its preparation and design process.
Vice President Karin Herrera attended the ceremony, and during her address, she explained that for the current administration, it is essential to reinforce the commitment to the dignity of the victims and the recognition of the organizations that have defended democracy.
The vice president mentioned, “History must be known to prevent what hurt us so much from continuing to affect the population. This reminds us that we must pay attention to the surviving victims of the armed conflict.”
Regarding the plan, she mentioned that its main purposes are to retake the memory of the victims and to strengthen the work to recover the archives of the extinct Programa Nacional de Resarcimiento (National Reparations Program). The Minister of Culture, Liwy Grazioso, the Nobel Peace Prize, Rigoberta Mechú, and victims and representatives of families affected by the Internal Armed Conflict were present at the ceremony.
The activity included the changing of the White Rose of Peace by Elvia Antonieta Sep Quiej, who, on behalf of the Platform of Victims of the Internal Armed Conflict, expressed her gratitude for having been distinguished as a messenger of peace.
