Guatemala City, by AGN.- “We are appalled by the pain and devastation in Ukraine,” said President Alejandro Giammattei, who visited areas that have been the target of attacks by Russia.
During the joint statement made with his counterpart, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the president reiterated the call for world peace and the end of this conflict. He expressed his solidarity with the Ukrainian people who have resisted with courage.
He also added, “We stand in profound solidarity with the families who have been innocent victims of this terrible war in their homes, neighborhoods, and cities. Families who have experienced irreparable losses to their nation as a result of this unjustified war.”
On the other hand, the head of state honored the memory of the soldiers who have left their families and given their lives to protect Ukraine’s independence and territorial integrity. Soldiers who sacrificed their lives to defend an entire country’s dignity on the battlefield.
He said this conflict is one of the darkest moments of this century.
“We came here to reiterate our absolute and full support for President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who has the leadership, courage, and great dignity that keeps this nation together.”
Appeal to humanity
In his speech, the Guatemalan president emphasized that a world that believes in the universal principles of respect must not tolerate the unacceptable nor be indifferent, let alone remain silent because it is a way to lose our humanity.
“As long as human lives are lost, we cannot look the other way. As long as human lives are lost in pointless wars, we must promote, now more than ever, democracy, peace, and the diplomatic solution to disputes between nations.” He explained.
