U.S. Delegation met with Guatemalan authorities

Authorities addressed actions to boost development, security, and the approach to migration.

Guatemala City, by Brenda Larios -AGN-. An American delegation led by the Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs of the U.S. Department of State, Eric Jacobstein, arrived in Guatemala to meet with Guatemalan authorities. 

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs -Minex- mentioned that the delegation met with Minister Carlos Martínez to address the actions to promote development, security, and the approach to migration from a holistic perspective.

Other topics

The U.S. Embassy in Guatemala reported that this delegation also spoke with indigenous leaders. The meeting highlighted the importance of citizen participation in advancing democracy, inclusion, economic prosperity, and human rights in Guatemala.

During a meeting with the private sector, Ambassador Tobin Bradley and Deputy Assistant Secretary Eric Jacobstein stressed the importance of promoting more investment, employment, security, and trade. They discussed the necessary conditions to achieve economic prosperity and offer opportunities for Guatemalans to reduce irregular migration. 

According to U.S. authorities, “The U.S. commitment to work with the government of Bernardo Arévalo and Karin Herrera to strengthen ties between the two countries, generating opportunities for Guatemalans and addressing the root causes of migration.”


The American delegation held a meeting with migration authorities to reinforce the close collaboration in the address of migration under the framework of the Los Angeles Declaration on Migration and Protection.

The delegation visited other countries of Central America such as El Salvador. 

Eric Jacobstein currently serves as a Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs, covering Central America, Cuba, and regional migration. 

He previously served at the White House as the Special Advisor to the Vice President for the Western Hemisphere and as National Security Council Director for Central America and Cuba.
