Guatemala City, October 22 AGN, by Yuliza Muñoz -Venezuelan migrants were thankful for the attention provided by Guatemalan authorities to manage the procedures for their voluntary return to their country of origin.
“The journey was tough for us…we are very grateful to the Police, the Army, and migration authorities because they are taking us to the border,” said one of the Venezuelan migrants.
In this regard, the Minister of the Interior, David Napoleón Barrientos, stated that the ministry will remain working through its various institutions. The goal is to support migrants, ensure their safety and facilitate their return.
Minister Barrientos also thanked the Guatemalan Migration Institute, the National Civil Police -PNC-, and the Guatemalan Army for their work.
Support to Migrants
At least 125 Venezuelan migrants arrived in Guatemala and were assisted after they requested support to return voluntarily to Venezuela.
According to the Guatemalan Institute of Migration -IGM-.“On this day, 125 safe conducts were issued to Venezuelans returning voluntarily to their country. Arrangements are being made with the Venezuelan Embassy in Guatemala, which is issuing travel passes to allow people to leave Guatemalan territory.”
The foreigners entered the country illegally. Some of them were at the Central de Mayoreo -CENMA- in zone 12 of Guatemala City.
After requesting assistance, they were taken from CENMA to the border of Agua Caliente, Esquipulas, Chiquimula.
“We thank the people of Guatemala, the Police, the Army, and migration authorities, who have supported us 100%,” commented one of the Venezuelan migrants.
Hundreds of foreign migrants have recently arrived in Guatemala, trying to pass through the country toward their final destination, the United States of America. In this regard, the authorities maintain checkpoints at the borders promoting regular, orderly, and safe migration.
In addition, the government of Guatemala is strengthening strategies to provide assistance to migrants and ensure the safety of Guatemalans.
