Guatemala City, by Brenda Larios -AGN- The Secretary-General of the Organization of American States -OAS-, Luis Almagro, highlighted the political will of the government of President Alejandro Giammattei to conduct an orderly transition process in the country.
During a press conference, the Press Secretary of the Presidency, Kevin Lopez Oliva, announced what was expressed by the OAS representative during the first meeting with the elected presidential authorities.
In the meeting, the OAS Secretary-General, Luis Almagro, said, ” The initiative undertaken by the President is fundamental as an example of the strengthening of the country’s democracy.”
The Press Secretary of the Presidency emphasized that the OAS has viewed this meeting as a democratic example for Guatemala and the region.
Institutional Commitment
Press Secretary Lopez reiterated the commitment of the Executive branch to support the 2023-2024 transition process.
On that regard, he stated, “This is an institutional commitment from the outgoing presidency to strengthen the role of the president-elect. These actions ensure they have the necessary information and can begin their duties from day one.”
The Press Secretary emphasized that the presence of the OAS is significant for the country, which resulted from an invitation from President Alejandro Giammattei to accompany this process. Furthermore, he mentioned that the goal during this transition process is to empower the president-elect with State information to enable him to exercise his functions fully.
The meeting
Representatives from each commission responsible for this process attended the first meeting between the president, Alejandro Giammattei, and the elected team.

Representatives of the OAS accredited in Guatemala and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed the delegation.
The delegation’s arrival complies with the decision of the Permanent Council of the OAS, which approved its participation in the process, as it contributes to the transparency of the general elections in the country.
