The President of Guatemala met with the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court

Guatemala City, by Daniel Coromac -AGN- President Bernardo Arévalo met with the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court -ICC- Karim Khan.

This meeting is part of the president’s work agenda in his first international trip. He continues his diplomatic tour through several European countries.

Bilateral meetings will be part of the president’s trip to the Old Continent after participating in the Security Round Table in Munich, Germany. He will use his role as representative of the nation to seek approaches and strengthen alliances with countries interested in investing in Guatemala.

Since  Bernardo Arévalo and Karin Herrera took office, numerous nations have congratulated Guatemala for its democratic achievement. This is an opportunity for the nation to build bridges and improve diplomatic ties.

The meeting with Khan is just one stop on the President’s work trip. He is expected to meet with authorities from several European countries and with authorities from international organizations.

The approximation of the ICC Prosecutor to Guatemala is not new. Last year, Khan visited the country during the assembly of the 9th Summit of Heads of State of the Association of Caribbean States.

He expressed his interest in a closer relationship between the ICC and Latin American countries primarily to address sex- and gender-based crimes against children and human trafficking.

As well as the search for consultation processes on environmental crimes. The consequences of the climate have a direct impact on the population.

The region needs to join efforts to address the growing cybercrime affecting societies.
