Guatemala City, by Julio Morales -AGN- An extraordinary session of the Permanent Council of the Organization of American States -OAS- was held today. Through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs -Minex-, the Government of Guatemala reiterated that democracy and sovereignty prevail. It also expressed its unrestricted commitment to ensure that on January 14, 2024, the presidential ticket will take office.
“I can assure you, without any doubt, that none of those present can deny that in Guatemala, there is democracy, sovereignty, and the unrestricted commitment led by President Alejandro Giammattei to ensure that on January 14, there will be a new President who will watch over the wellbeing of all Guatemalans in a democratic country that we are defending today.” stated the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
The Guatemalan Minister of Foreign Affairs shared his hope that, following the work carried out with the elected presidential ticket, it would be possible to achieve a declaration that sets an example for all nations and demonstrates that Guatemala has a democratic system.
Peaceful Elections
During the extraordinary session, Minister Mario Búcaro acknowledged the coordinated efforts of the Ministries of the Interior, Defense, and the Public Ministry. This collaboration resulted in one of the most peaceful elections in Guatemalan history. It led to the certification of the results of the second round of elections by the Supreme Electoral Tribunal on August 28.
The Foreign Minister mentioned that after the first round results, the presidential ticket was notified about the right to the security provided by the Secretariat of Administrative and Security Affairs -SAAS-.
In addition, he explained that as part of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights precautionary measures to the elected authorities, the Government of Guatemala strengthened security to guarantee their physical well-being.
He stressed that the president-elect and the vice-president-elect had received bulletproof vehicles, personal security, and perimeter security.
Finally, he highlighted the hard work of all sectors in Guatemala to guarantee the success of the most peaceful elections in the country’s history.
