Guatemala City, by Yuliza Muñoz -AGN- The Guatemalan Tourism Institute -Inguat- presented the Sustainable Tourism Observatory of Petén.

It monitors the economic, environmental, and social impact of tourism destinations.

The Director of Inguat attended the ceremony, highlighting the value of this system for the Guatemalan tourism sector.

Better Actions

According to Inguat, implementing this system increases the effectiveness of planning the development of the Petén, Adventure in the Mayan World tourist region.

These results will make it possible to identify areas that need to be reinforced and create new actions for developing the country’s tourism sector.

The Observatory

It is a system developed by the World Tourism Organization -UNWTO- to manage scientific information on tourism to create improvements and solve various problems.

They are also part of the International Network of Sustainable Tourism Observatories -INSTO-, the network of tourism observatories that monitors the impact of tourism in the sector.

This initiative focuses on UNWTO’s growing commitment to sustainable and resilient tourism in its member regions.

The data underscores that since their creation in 2004, at least 31 observatories have joined the UNWTO INSTO Network. This network manages tourism plans based on the evidence provided by this tool.

Inguat is responsible for developing the necessary procedures to integrate, update, systematize, and disseminate statistical information on Guatemalan tourism. It is also in charge of planning, development, and promotion activities for decision-making in tourism.
