Guatemala City, by Yuliza Muñoz -AGN- The Secretariat of Social Works of the President’s Wife -Sosep- has benefited more than 2,700 people in vulnerable conditions through its Social Service program.
The provision of more than 1,000 wheelchairs complies with the Social Development pillar established in President Alejandro Giammattei’s General Government Policy 2020-2024.
Sosep’s work focuses on assisting people living in poverty and extreme poverty. In this regard, it has four programs targeted to different groups. The programs are:
- Community Centers
- Improvement of Women’s Socioeconomic Conditions
- Mis Años Dorados (“Golden Years”)
- Social Services
Social Service
The two departments that serve Guatemalans are Social Work and Assistance to Migrant Family Units.
The Social Work Department seeks to assist impoverished people by providing orthopedic products, medical treatment, medical workshops, and other social services. The actions include the delivery of:
- wheelchairs
- walkers
- crutches
- disposable diapers
- hearing aids
- internal prostheses for upper and lower extremities
- medications
- medical and laboratory services
- ophthalmological services
- rental of oxygen concentrators for domiciliary use
- funeral services
Migrant Assistance
The Sosep, through the Department of Assistance to Migrant Family Units, has the purpose of executing institutional actions established in the National Protocol for the Reception and Assistance of Migrant Children and Adolescents.
Therefore, returned family units are assisted, and the corresponding evaluations are made to integrate them into the other assistance programs to improve their quality of life and prevent them from migrating again.
