Guatemala City, by Yuliza Muñoz -AGN- Under the commitment to assist the Guatemalan population in vulnerable conditions, the Secretariat of Social Works of the President’s Wife -SOSEP- has helped more than 5,000 returned migrant family units.

Currently, this secretariat is in charge of the reception of family units from abroad. Therefore, it has created spaces to provide the necessary attention to returnees, such as the one in the Guatemalan Air Force and the Reception Center for Returnees in San Marcos. All this is part of the Social Service program, which the Secretariat coordinates.

According to SOSEP, care is prioritized for fathers, mothers, and children in each family group. Upon arrival, each person receives medical and psychological support. If necessary, assistance is coordinated with ambulatory equipment with the support of the Ministry of Health.

They are also provided with hygiene kits, medicines, and food, and the returnees receive economic support to arrive home safe and sound.

These actions are implemented jointly with the Ministry of Health, Education, and Social Development and the International Organization for Migration, among other institutions.

Social Services

This program serves Guatemalans through two departments: Social Work and Attention to Migrant Family Units.

The Social Work Department seeks to assist people who are in a situation of poverty. This is done by providing orthopedic products, medical treatment services, medical clinics, and other social services.

It assists Guatemalans through two units: social work and attention to migrant family units.

As for the Department of Attention to Migrant Family Units, SOSEP aims to execute institutional actions established in the National Protocol for the Reception and Attention of Migrant Children and Young People.
