Guatemala City, by AGN – The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, thanked President Alejandro Giammattei for his visit to his country. The Guatemalan president visited Ukrainian cities attacked by Russia.

“I am delighted to welcome the President of the Republic of Guatemala, Alejandro Giammattei. This is the Guatemalan head of state’s first visit to Ukraine in the history of our bilateral relations,” said Zelenskyy during a joint statement with President Giammattei.

“It is the first visit of a leader of a Latin American country since February 24, and in the last 12 years,” the Ukrainian president declared.

“It is crucial that such a visit is taking place right now, during the brutal and colonialist war of the Russian Federation against our people, against Ukraine,” he stressed.

“Ukraine is grateful to Guatemala for its support, and to you personally, Mr. President, I am very thankful for your principled stance,”  Zelenskyy added.

On the other hand, the Ukrainian head of state emphasized that the serious consequences of the Russian aggression are happening worldwide. He highlighted the food crisis and the destabilization of prices everywhere, including the energy markets. Also, the extraordinary political challenges to the entire international legal order.

Consequences for Latin America

He remarked that for the citizens of dozens of states and in Latin America, the cost of living is rising unfairly. This is because one state, the Russian Federation, decided to undermine the world’s existing political and economic relations.

“Only together can we protect the world and only together can we protect the international legal order. I am grateful to Guatemala for its clear and consistent support of our state, territorial integrity, and sovereignty. For its unwavering position on protecting human rights and the fundamental right of every nation to freedom, to independence,” Zelenskyy added.

Ultimately, he said they agreed to continue joining efforts on international platforms. This is to continue isolating Russia increasing the price of this war and destabilizing the people.

President Zelenskyy declared “I want to thank Mr. Giammattei for supporting the sanctions policy against Russia. And I am glad that Guatemala is ready to join the promotion of the initiative to create a Special Tribunal to punish Russia for the crime of aggression against the people of Ukraine,” he noted.

Finally, he invited the Guatemalan President to participate in the summit of the Crimea Platform Summit to be held online next August 23.
