Guatemala City, Jul 25 (AGN) – During his visit to Ukraine, President Alejandro Giammattei reiterated that Guatemala has raised its voice against the conflict in that European nation.

During a joint statement with his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, he highlighted that “we will always be coherent with our words. Guatemala will not remain silent.”

“Guatemala and the nations we love peace must unite against all expressions of war. We will relentlessly promote global commitments to ensure that the drama that Ukraine is experiencing today does not happen again,” President Giammattei said.

Effects

On the other hand, the President of Guatemala underscored the consequences that this war has brought, in terms of the global economic repercussions which generated inflation, and the increase of the cost of living, therefore, more poverty, where a future with a food crisis is foreseen. It could mean the death of millions of people.

In addition, the head of the State questioned whether there will be the capacity to explain to future generations what has been done every time an armed conflict breaks out, today we have the historic opportunity to convey a strong answer.

What if we come together and not apart? Leave our differences behind, and stop being divided? If rather than confronting one another, we confront the causes that are putting humanity at risk. This century should not represent the destruction of humanity, but the hope of leaving a better world”, he emphasized.

Raising the voice

In light of the consequences of Russia’s attack on Ukraine, President Giammattei urged to denounce these events, which he considers one of the darkest moments of this century.

He said, “As long as human beings die, we cannot silence our voices. As long as human beings die, we cannot look the other way.“

Meanwhile, the Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky, agreed that “only together can we protect the world, and only together can we protect the international legal order.”

He added “I am grateful to Guatemala for its clear and consistent support of our state, territorial integrity, and sovereignty. For its unwavering position on the protection of human rights and the fundamental right of every nation to freedom, to independence.”
