Guatemala City, Aug 22 (AGN).- The President of Guatemala, Alejandro Giammattei, has been the only regional leader who has met with the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, to offer him support, according to digital media Tribuna, el Otro Lado de las Noticias.
The media also recalled during a virtual speech at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, President Giammattei arrived on Ukrainian territory in July and expressed his solidarity with the Ukrainian people.
Ukrainian and European Union (EU) authorities appreciated the President’s visit as several foreign media highlighted it. EU Ambassador, Thomas Peyker, described Giammattei’s visit to Ukraine an act of solidarity.
Guatemala has taken a serious position before the United Nations Organization, and other international institutions regarding our opposition to the continuation of the armed conflict, the head of state explained during an interview for a news program.
Effective communication
The Ukrainian President called on the countries of South America not to be indifferent to the situation in the face of Russia’s invasion. The President stated to a group of Chilean students that Kyiv does not have enough communication with the region, something that he considered important to mention.
In his speech, he asked Chileans and South Americans to consider cutting economic ties with Russia, including imposing sanctions and opposing Russian propaganda.
Likewise, he addressed Spanish and Portuguese colonies in the region, referring to Russia’s intention to conquer Ukrainian territory as purely colonialist. When a state turns energy poverty or hunger into a weapon, it harms everyone in the world, he said.
The digital media’s publication indicates that, contrary to most of Western Europe and North America, support for Ukraine against the Russian invasion did not become a popular cause.
It also failed to attract attention from the public or regional leaders.
