Guatemala City, by Yuliza Muñoz -AGN- During the presentation of the 2023-2024 Transition Report, President Alejandro Giammattei acknowledged the support the Organization of American States -OAS- provided throughout the process.
President Giammattei highlighted that the process was lengthy and involved the commitment and effort of his entire team. The transition’s objective is to prioritize Guatemala, democracy, and the constitutional principle of the alternation of power. Additionally, the methodology was designed to serve as a reference for other countries.
President Giammattei thanked Luis Almagro, Secretary-General of the OAS, for attending the official event.
In his speech, he stated, “Thank you sincerely, Mr. Luis Almagro, for your support in difficult moments. The transition commission accompanied us during the dialogue that ended the protests, roadblocks, and the obstruction of the country’s economic activities. The OAS was always present.”
The President explained that he invited Secretary Almagro to have the OAS’s support on January 14, the day of the handover ceremony.
OAS Support
As evidence of the Guatemalan authorities’ effective performance, the OAS Secretary-General highlighted the efforts led by President Giammattei.
He specifically mentioned the Executive’s evident commitment to transferring information reflected in the sector meetings.
Secretary-General Almagro underscored that this transfer of sectoral information, initiated by President Alejandro Giammattei and technically prepared by the Segeplan, has been conducted in an orderly manner, with continuous public updates on its progress.
Special Recognition
President Giammattei also acknowledged the work of OAS Ambassador Diego Paz, who was present in all sectoral meetings. During the ceremony, President Giammattei recognized Ambassador Paz for going above and beyond his duty, being a faithful companion throughout the transition process, and providing the requested international oversight.
He emphasized that Ambassador Paz was present throughout the information transfer, encompassing all actions taken over the last four years for the country’s development.
