President Giammattei Provides Details on his Official Visit to Ukraine

The President reiterated his call for peace and respect for the sovereignty of nations.

Guatemala City -AGN- Lucía Contreras. – President Alejandro Giammattei provided details about his work visit to Ukraine and the results achieved with his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, during an interview on national television.

According to the President, the visit resulted from a phone call with Zelenskyy on June 23, in which the Ukrainian President invited him to the European country.

He explained that Guatemala has taken a firm position before the United Nations Organization and other international institutions regarding our opposition to the continuation of the armed conflict.

A Call for Peace

The Guatemalan President pointed out that his visit intended to send a message of peace to the world.

He explained that Guatemala required that if there is any difference between countries, it should be resolved through diplomatic ways.

The President remarked that he was able to visit at least three cities damaged by the war and learn what the Ukrainian population has suffered.

Bilateral Relations

As part of the dialogue between Giammattei and Zelenskyy, they discussed how the conflict between Russia and Ukraine is affecting global food security.

“They offered to supply us with any cereals we wanted. The production of this country is doing well and will allow us to have a commercial relationship to have food security,” he added.

Likewise, he reported that Guatemala began to dialogue with Caribbean countries to offer food and grains produced by Ukraine. For this, the Ministries of Foreign Affairs (MINEX) and of Agriculture, Livestock, and Food (MAGA) are in contact with the parties involved.

“Guatemala is going to function as a hub. This was settled on, the president said.”

During his visit to Ukraine, they talked about marketing Guatemalan products in that country, especially coffee. Also, the possibility that Guatemalan labor could be used in the reconstruction of the European country.

Lastly, the Guatemalan leader described his work visit as constructive and affirmed that both countries will continue working together.
