Guatemala City, by (AGN). – President Alejandro Giammattei and his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, made a joint statement during the tour of the Guatemalan president to this Eastern European country, where he visited the sites that have experienced the horrors of this confrontation.
“We are appalled by the pain and devastation in Ukraine,“ said Giammattei about the attacks inflicted by Russia.
During his speech, the Guatemalan President called for a united effort to work for peace and harmony among nations.
“As long as human lives are lost in senseless wars, we must promote, now more than ever, democracy, peace, and the diplomatic solution to disputes between nations,” said the president.
Also, he called on people not to lose faith and hope that human beings may grow up in a free world, with a dignified and peaceful life.
The joint statement was given in Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, where both presidents were accompanied by their respective delegations.
The heads of state reaffirmed their support and commitment to strengthening relations of friendship and cooperation.
The Charter of the United Nations
In his speech, President Giammattei referred to the provisions of the Charter of the United Nations.
“To protect future generations from the scourge of war, we must reaffirm faith in the fundamental rights of people, the dignity and value of the human person,” he said.
He mentioned that it is important to seek equality of rights for men and women, but above all, for large and small nations.
Conditions must be created to maintain justice and respect for the obligations derived from treaties and other sources of international law.
He pointed out that we must practice tolerance, live together in peace as good neighbors, and join forces to preserve peace and international security.
Call for Unity
The Guatemalan President sent the world’s nations a message to work together to restore peace.
“Nations of the world, from Kyiv, let us unite to end this confrontation and restore peace. Every day this conflict drags on, a child’s future is shortened, lives are lost, and we need more hope in humanity,” he said.
“We, from Guatemala, have brought a message as a nation that believes in peace, respect, and dignity of human beings. We firmly believe that efforts must be made to raise the banner of peace, to protect life and hope for a better world,” the President stated.
Gratefulness
Meanwhile, the President of Ukraine thanked the Guatemalan President for his visit to his country, emphasizing that this is the first visit of a Latin American head of state in the last 12 years and since this conflict began.
The Ukrainian president declared “I am delighted to welcome the President of the Republic of Guatemala to Kyiv. This is the first visit of the Guatemalan head of state to Ukraine in the entire history of our bilateral relations.”
In his speech, President Zelenskyy stressed that this visit was crucial during the brutal and colonialist war of the Russian Federation against this country.
“Ukraine is grateful to Guatemala for its support, and to you personally, Mr. President, I thank you very much for your principled stance,” he said.
The Ukrainian leader thanked this rapprochement with his Guatemalan counterpart for the conversations, his visit, and his support.
