Guatemala City, by -AGN- Guatemala held its second presidential elections runoff, and the President of the United States congratulated Guatemala on a peaceful election.
President Biden in a post on his X account, “Congratulations to the people of Guatemala following a fair and peaceful second round of elections, and to Bernardo Arévalo de León on his election as the next President of Guatemala. I look forward to working together to foster prosperity and security in Guatemala.”
Second Runoff
Arévalo de León won the Presidential Elections Runoff with 59% of the votes against 37% of the votes obtained by the candidate of Unidad Nacional de la Esperanza -UNE- a former first lady, Sandra Torres.
The President of Guatemala, Alejandro Giammattei, and leaders from all over the region have already acknowledged Arevalo de Leon’s victory.
The European Union expressed its support for the participation of the people of Guatemala.
President Alejandro Giammattei congratulated President-Elect Bernardo Arévalo and extended his invitation for a peaceful transition process.
“I congratulate Guatemalans for the peaceful elections in 2023, with few isolated incidents. I also congratulate Bernardo Arevalo and extend an invitation to begin the orderly transition the day after the results are official.” President Giammattei stated in a post on his X account.
This process will begin once the results are made official by the Supreme Electoral Tribunal -TSE- until the transfer of power on January 14, 2024.
President Giammattei has offered his full support for the transition to ensure a transparent process. He also invited the President-elect to a meeting and to attend his last presidential work tour so that he could learn first-hand about the social programs.
