In his closing speech at this council, the President underscored that he took pride that no other administration has invested as much in the country’s inland regions such as Quetzaltenango, Jalapa, Petén, and Sololá.

President Giammattei emphasized that never in history had so much been done in the interior of the country.

Decentralization Process

In his message to the Conadur participants, President Alejandro Giammattei expressed that his administration’s decentralization process resulted in significant support to municipalities.

The president highlighted that decentralization strengthens local governments, the basic and primary institutions sustaining Guatemala’s democracy. He also emphasized the need to reinforce municipalities further and that the community councils for urban and rural development -Comude- should coordinate this effort with Conadur.

The president also underlined that the Electronic System for the Administration of Projects of Development Councils -Siprocode- has made it possible for mayors to make requests online. The Secretariat for Executive Coordination of the Presidency has promoted these advancements.

Progress

President Giammattei underscored that his administration focused on the country’s interior through projects benefiting the population, such as health, education, infrastructure, water and sanitation, and economic development. This focus on development includes the construction of 15 roads in Petén, 16 in Sololá, and 15 in Huehuetenango, among many other areas.

Furthermore, he mentioned that he felt proud that the country was in better shape than when he took office, pointing to the economic situation and cost of living. Regarding inflation, he noted how while in other countries it has reached three digits, Guatemala is currently at 4.75%.

Finally, the president indicated that the National Council for Urban and Rural Development offers the possibility to design anything desired for the country’s interior.
