Guatemala City, by Daniel Coromac -AGN-. The Secretary General of the Organization of American States -OAS-, Luis Almagro, attended the handover of the Transition Report led by President Alejandro Giammattei to the elected Vice President in the Salón Banderas of the National Palace of Culture.
Almagro said, “Thank you for the invitation to join you. I would also like to thank you for the invitation to attend the inauguration of the president-elect and vice-president-elect on January 14.”
During his speech, he described the transition process in Guatemala, from planning and creating the path to establishing the methodology of the transition process to its execution in its three phases. These phases included compiling information and its delivery in physical and digital form to the elected team. In addition to the meetings in the ministries, more than ten secretariats of the Executive and the Bank of Guatemala.
According to the Secretary-General, the meetings “were held promptly, with the best cooperative attitude of the parties. Those are the subject of the government transition report led by President Alejandro Giammattei.”
OAS Oversight
The OAS has followed the transition process since September 4, when Secretary Almagro witnessed the meeting between President Alejandro Giammattei and the elected team to present the methodology.
President Giammattei extended the invitation for this accompaniment, with the purpose of providing greater transparency to the process.
Almagro detailed the dates of each sector meeting held in the offices of the Executive Branch. In this regard, he expressed his special recognition to Ambassador Diego Paz, who was present at several meetings.
Support in the process
The OAS Secretary General also praised the efforts of the Secretariat for Planning and Programming of the Presidency to coordinate technical efforts to make the transition process possible.
Likewise, he indicated that the OAS has observed that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is working to carry out the transfer of power on January 14. The Foreign Ministry plans and sends invitations to Heads of State, diplomats, and other persons who will attend the event.
It has been a process of learning among peers for the elaboration of a project for Guatemala. It is absolutely important because it implies the alternation of power and the strengthening of democracy in the country.
President Alejandro Giammattei thanked the OAS for its help in mediation on behalf of the country’s welfare.
