OAS Delegation Participates in Transition Meeting in Guatemala

During the meeting, the authorities established the timetable of sectoral meetings to facilitate the exchange of information with the Executive branch.

Guatemala City, by Brenda Larios -AGN-. On Wednesday, October 4, an Organization of American States -OAS- delegation participated in the resumed dialogues between the transition commissions and the elected team.

The meeting occurred at the National Palace of Culture, with Diego Paz’s participation as this international organization’s representative.

The government of Guatemala informed on its official social networks, “Following up on the transition process, the government transition commission held a meeting with the transition authorities with the support of the OAS.”

The Invitation

The OAS delegation is participating in Guatemala’s 2023-2024 transition process after an invitation from President Alejandro Giammattei to the OAS Secretary General, Luis Almagro.

During the first meeting between the President Alejandro Giammattei, and the elected team on September 4, each of the commissions in charge of this process participated in the event.

The OAS delegation was comprised of:

  • Luis Almagro
  • Diego Paz
  • Gustavo Cinosi
  • Isabel de Saint Malo
  • Liliana Ayalde
  • Pablo Sandino
  • Franchesca Sterlin

OAS representatives will participate in the entire transition process until the transfer of power on January 14.

Participation

The OAS delegation has followed this process since September 4, when the first meeting between the president and elected officials took place.

On September 11, Secretary Almagro and his team participated in the delivery of institutional files and the transition platform to the elected team.

On September 28, OAS representatives in the country met with President Alejandro Giammattei at the presidential office.

According to a press release from the Secretariat of Social Communication of the Presidency, “This approach aims to provide oversight to the transition process, ensuring that it is carried out with transparency in strengthening democracy and the alternation of power.”

The government of Guatemala reiterated its commitment since the beginning of this year, and as instructed by the president, the government agencies have been following up on the process.
