Chiquimula, by Karla Peralta. -AGN- The implementation of the expansion project for the drinking water system in the Laguna de Cayur village in Olopa, Chiquimula, has recently concluded.

The project’s investment amounts to USD 100,000, and the system will benefit approximately 1,037 inhabitants.

Authorities reported that the final disbursement was recently made at the Departmental Development Council -Codede- of Chiquimula to the Municipality of Olopa.

Project Details

The project, named Expansion of the Drinking Water System in the Laguna de Cayur village, Olopa, Chiquimula, is identified with the National Public Investment System number 294520, and it consists of:

  • Cleaning, survey, and clearing
  • Topographic layout
  • Installation of pipes
  • Crossing of a ditch
  • Household connections
  • Break pressure tank
  • Distribution boxes and a branch control valve

Meeting the Needs

This project represents the fulfillment of actions by the Government of Guatemala in coordination with Codede and the Municipality of Olopa.

Previously, the Laguna de Cayur village needed help to meet its inhabitants’ demand for drinking water due to the deterioration of the existing infrastructure. These conditions made it challenging to address the needs of the families from the village and provide quality service and continuous water flow.

However, households with irregular drinking water will now benefit from the system built through the project. They will no longer be obliged to transport water from distant sources.

The Benefits

The completion of the project translates into health and well-being. Additionally, it increases drinking water coverage in the municipality, reducing the incidence of gastrointestinal diseases.

Achieved results include:

  • An efficient distribution system for flow and pressure
  • Reduction of gastrointestinal diseases
  • Efficient flow and consumption in each household

Local authorities highlighted that the introduction of drinking water service in the communities had been a priority in the government’s plan under the leadership of the President of the Republic, in compliance with the National Development Plan and Policy.
