King Felipe VI receives President Bernardo Arévalo in Madrid

President Arévalo's official visit to Spain was in response to an invitation made by the King.

Guatemala City, by AGN.- King Felipe VI of Spain received this Thursday in the Zarzuela Royal Palace in Madrid the President of Guatemala, Bernardo Arévalo, during his first working visit to Europe. The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Carlos Ramiro Martínez, and the Minister of Economy, Gabriela García, accompanied the president. 

The Spanish Ambassador to Guatemala, José María Laviña, and Susana Sumelzo, Secretary of State for Ibero-America, the Caribbean, and Spanish in the World, attended the event.


President Arevalo’s official visit to Spain was in response to an invitation made by the monarch in January when he attended the inauguration ceremony.

The Guatemalan President will later attend a reception offered by Felipe VI in his honor, accompanied by the First Lady, Dr. Lucrecia Peinado.

According to information from the Royal Household, members of the Spanish government and representatives of other institutions related to the country will attend the lunch.

Other activities 

Previously, the president was received at the Palacio de Cibeles by the mayor of Madrid, José Luis Martínez-Almeida. The Madrid Town Hall shared a message on its X account, welcoming him for his visit to Spain.

Later, President Arévalo will also meet with President Pedro Sánchez, who will receive him at La Moncloa.

Official Visit 

The official visit to Spain is part of the working visit the Guatemalan president carries out in Europe. This visit aims to strengthen the ties of friendship and cooperation with European nations and express gratitude for the support this region has given to the country.

In the previous days, Arévalo has attended different activities and met with presidents and representatives of international institutions and organizations in search of political support from the European Union to be translated into cooperation for the country’s development.

Before visiting Brussels, Belgium, Arévalo was in Paris, where he met with President Emmanuel Macron. He was also in Munich, Germany, where he participated in the Security Conference and held a meeting with the President of Ukraine, Volodymir Zelenskyy.

On Wednesday, the President met in Geneva, Switzerland, with the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, and for Refugees, Filippo Grandi. Lastly, he met with the president of the International Olympic Committee.

Bernardo Arévalo, President of Guatemala, is seeking to transform the political support received from the European Union into concrete cooperation actions for the country’s economic development.
