Kamala Harris Underscores Guatemala’s Efforts with Safe Mobility Offices

President Giammattei received praise for the actions undertaken for regular migration.

Guatemala City, by -AGN – The President of Guatemala held a telephone call with the Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harris, regarding the Secure Mobility Offices. She expressed her gratitude for the cooperation established with Guatemala.

This conversation took place days after the arrival of a delegation led by U.S. Security Advisor, Philip Gordon. At the meeting on May 31, they discussed the implementation of the Safe Mobility Offices in advance.

Promoting Regular Migration

Harris thanked President Giammattei for his involvement in carrying out the plan. She also highlighted the leadership of the Guatemalan government in replicating these actions in other countries such as Mexico, Colombia, and Costa Rica.

The Secure Mobility Office facility is intended to provide more legal pathways for migrating to the United States.

During the conversation, the U.S. official appreciated the current relationship between the two countries, and highlighted the ties of friendship, cooperation, and collaboration in addressing the issues of:

  • The fight against drug and human trafficking in the region.
  •  Issues of irregular migration

Vice President Harris also expressed her best wishes to the people of Guatemala for the 2023 general elections. She indicated that the United States hopes for a peaceful election process.

President Giammattei declared that all efforts are being made to ensure peaceful election conditions to guarantee the right of Guatemalans to vote.

Safe Mobility Offices

This program combines the efforts of the Guatemalan and U.S. governments, the International Organization for Migration -IOM-, and the United Nations Refugee Agency -UNHCR-.

This new modality will operate for six months, starting on June 12 at 10:00 a.m. (local time)

The Safe Mobility Offices assist those interested in migrating legally. It applies to residents of Guatemala and the countries that are part of the Central American Free Mobility Agreement C4. These are:

  • El Salvador 
  • Honduras
  • Nicaragua

Subsequently, if the applicants qualify for any of the legal pathways, they will be notified to continue the corresponding process.

This program offers refugee status, family reunification, H1 and H2 visas.

The government of Guatemala reiterates its commitment to promoting safe, orderly, and regular migration.
