These actions promote local tourism and family recreation. In addition, it is another of the strategies implemented for the promotion of the different tourist attractions in the country. The practice of bird watching in its natural environment is also known as avitourism.

Recently, Inguat organized the first birdwatching event exclusively for women in collaboration with the Club Observadores de Aves Urbanas in San Cristóbal El Alto, in Antigua Guatemala. According to Inguat, the purpose is to promote the connection with nature through outdoor activities such as observing different species and art workshops encouraging meditation in natural environments.

Guatemala is a subtropical country, meaning it has a great variety of birds that find suitable conditions for their development in the different forested areas of the country. It is possible to watch species such as:

  • mockingbirds
  • woodpeckers
  • spumuy and torcaz pigeons
  • rufous-collared sparrow
  • sparrowhawks
  • cheeks, among others
