IGSS Authorities Promote Innovative Social Assistance Programs 

The Guatemalan Social Security Institute promotes the Social Assistance Program for Guatemalans living abroad.

Guatemala City, by Jenny Herrera- The Guatemalan Social Security Institute -IGSS-, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs -Minex- and the Social Communication Secretariat of the Presidency -SCSP- joined forces to sign a memorandum of understanding. The main objective of this alliance is to expand the coverage of the IGSS by involving Guatemalans living abroad.

José Adolfo Flamenco Jau, Chairman of the Board of Directors, and Edson Javier Rivera Méndez, Manager of IGSS, attended the ceremony.

Flamenco Jau highlighted the importance of the organic law that has guided the institute’s development. Since its foundation, the IGSS has focused on providing health benefits and protection in cases of accident and maternity.

He also noted the construction of hospitals and the progressive coverage expansion over time. In 1977, the program for disability,, and death benefits was approved. In addition to the Special Protection Program for Private Household Workers -Precapi- included in 2012.

Innovation and new programs

The chairman of IGSS highlighted the  2010 milestone when they achieved coverage in all departments. In 2023, they presented a new program: care for Guatemalan migrants and their families. This program seeks to dignify the old age of those who return to Guatemala.

The agreement established has a crucial focus on care for Guatemalans abroad. The director of IGSS, Edson Javier Rivera Méndez, highlighted the importance of this historic step. He also explained that, with this agreement, family members abroad can receive care at any IGSS hospital.

Rivera Méndez manager emphasized that Guatemalans abroad must comply with 240 contributions and reach 60 years of age to retire.

This commitment reflects the interest of the IGSS in addressing the mobility of migration and guaranteeing a dignified retirement for Guatemalans abroad.

With this agreement, the IGSS looks to the future with a global outlook, reaffirming its fundamental role in building a society that prioritizes the well-being of all its citizens, regardless of their location.
