Guatemala Reaffirms Support to Ukraine

President Giammattei spoke by telephone with his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Guatemala City, by Daniel Coromac (AGN) – This Thursday, the President of Guatemala and his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, held a telephone conversation. During the call, they reaffirmed the excellent relations between both nations and Guatemala’s diplomatic support and efforts in different international forums for peace in Ukraine, which is at war due to Russia’s invasion.

President Zelenskyy thanked the leadership and support that  President Giammattei has shown to the Ukrainian people, especially in the current conditions.

Support before the OAS

Zelensky praised the President of Guatemala for his efforts before the Organization of American States -OAS- regarding a statement against Russia and in favor of Ukraine. He also appreciated the initiative to allow Ukraine to address the OAS attendees and the leadership of President Giammattei.

Likewise, Ukraine congratulated Guatemala for its electoral process. This process will culminate on August 20 after a second runoff presidential election.

The Guatemalan President mentioned his request to the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, Karim Khan, to establish a court to prosecute possible war crimes committed in Ukraine.

Support in Search of Peace

President Zelenskyy also acknowledged Guatemala’s support for the Peace Plan proposed by Ukraine. This project is a step toward a cease-fire and the withdrawal from its territories.

The Guatemalan President expressed his support for the initiative underscoring his promise to encourage more countries to join the effort, especially before the United Nations.

During the telephone conversation, they emphasized the good relationship, diplomatic support, and the Guatemala alliance for Ukraine, especially the ongoing efforts to finalize a possible commercial agreement.
