Guatemala City, by Julio Morales -AGN- Guatemala hosted the First Regional Congress on Rehabilitation and Reintegration of Inmates Guatemala 2023, with the participation of the Ministry of the Interior -Mingob-, representatives of the United States Embassy, and the Secretariat of Social Welfare of the Presidency.
The authorities emphasized that the meeting’s goal is to strengthen the efforts based on the experiences of other countries in the reintegration of inmates.
The Participants
The event gathered representatives from 250 Latin American nations, including:
- Dominican Republic
- Mexico
- Peru
- Argentina
- Ecuador
- Colombia
- El Salvador
- Honduras
- Costa Rica
The Minister of the Interior indicated that the activity lasted three days, in which experts in rehabilitation and social reintegration explained different aspects of the subject.
According to the minister, “Guatemala has several successful programs, such as the New Prison Management Model. During these days, participants shared experiences to enrich the work carried out.”
At the same time, the US Embassy representatives expressed the importance of strengthening actions through innovative strategies.
Electronic Control
Minister Barrientos also assured the project continuity for a prison center in the southern region this year.
Finally, he added that starting on June 1, the implementation of 2000 devices (bracelets) with electronic control will begin.
