Guatemala City, by Brenda Larios -AGN- During an extraordinary session of the Permanent Council of the Organization of American States -OAS-, the Minister of Foreign Affairs -Minex-, Mario Búcaro, reaffirmed the commitment of the Government of Guatemala to democracy and the alternation of power.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs emphasized that the Executive authorities are proceeding with the transition process 2023-2024 in an efficient and transparent manner. The purpose of this process is to guarantee the constitutional principle of change of power, focusing on the well-being of the Guatemalan population.
In his address, Minister Búcaro referred to the statement by President Alejandro Giammattei, in which he highlighted how Guatemala’s constitutional framework ensured the transparency of the electoral process.
Minister Búcaro explained that the Executive branch acknowledges that democracy is a system of government that resides with the people and creates opportunities for political decision-making and participatory processes. The Guatemalan Foreign minister also highlighted that President Giammattei and the Executive branch he leads are committed to making the necessary efforts to ensure that the constitutional order and the rule of law prevail in Guatemala.
Transition Process
During his speech, the minister explained how the transition process has developed and how the elected authorities suspended it on September 12. President Giammattei respected the decision and, together with the Secretary General of the OAS, Luis Almagro, urged the elected team to resume the process.
Regarding these events in the transition process, Minister Búcaro mentioned: “The government of Guatemala received on September 21 the request of the elected administration to resume the transition process. The process was resumed on October 4 with a proposal for changes in the methodology by the elected president and accepted by the constitutional president.”
