During the presentation of the First Annual Report for 2022-2023 of the Public Ministry on May 17, the President of the Republic of Guatemala, Dr. Alejandro Giammattei Falla, talked about his decision to appoint Dr. Porras.
“I appointed her Attorney General for a second constitutional term a year ago. I emphasize sovereignty because I did it despite the meddling of some and the warnings and threats against appointing her. I believe I did the right thing and I’m convinced that I did,” stated the President.
Dr. María Consuelo Porras Argueta is the first person to be re-elected for a second constitutional term as Attorney General of the Republic and Chief of the Public Ministry of Guatemala after concluding her first term in 2018-2023.
After two sets of interviews in a public evaluation methodology with five candidates aspiring for the position, Dr. Porras Argueta obtained the highest evaluations and was unanimously elected by the members of the Nominating Committee, who evaluated academic, professional, and ethical aspects of the applicants, confirming that she fulfilled all the constitutional requirements.
Dr. Porras has 35 years of professional experience in the institutions of the justice sector, and the results obtained during her first term in office demonstrate her total capacity to continue in the position. Her academic performance was evaluated, as she holds a doctorate in Law and Master’s degrees in Criminal Law, Jurisdictional Management, and Constitutional Law, as well as her experience as a professor at several universities in the country.
María Consuelo Porras Argueta was appointed and sworn in as Attorney General of the Republic and Director of the Public Ministry for the period 2022-2026 by Dr. Alejandro Giammattei Falla, President of Guatemala, on May 16, 2022.
Her reelection is an unprecedented act that strengthens the institutional structure by preserving the ethical and professional principles and values of the normative framework of the Public Ministry.
