Alta Verapaz, by -AGN.- Authorities presented the first phase of the trail at the principal viewpoint of the Semuc Champey Natural Monument in Cobán, Alta Verapaz. In addition, the National Council of Protected Areas -CONAP- and Orquigonia staff installed an inventory of the orchid flora in the protected area.
The Verapaces Regional Directorate of Conap, the Lanquín Municipality, Orquigonia Private Natural Reserve, the Manos a la Obra Foundation, and the Lanquín Tourism Self-Management Committee are in charge of promoting these actions.
According to the authorities, these actions are important to keep the tourist center with the highest standards to ensure the visitors’ comfort.
Location
Semuc Champey is in the municipality of Cobán, Alta Verapaz department.
It is part of the Guatemalan System of Protected Areas and represents an outstanding destination for tourists in Guatemala.

Semuc Champey has vast ecological richness since a subtropical forest, home to different species of birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and fish, surrounds it.
The Viewpoint
Semuc Champey has a viewpoint of more than 50 meters high, where it is possible to admire the 350 meters long natural pools of the natural complex. In addition, it has waterfalls up to 40 feet and natural pools fed by streams.
Conap thanked the support for this monument and the confidence the communities have shown to the institution. It also emphasized its commitment to conserving protected areas and biological diversity and working in harmony with nature to preserve the Semuc Champey Natural Monument.
