Guatemala City, by Veylin Herrera -AGN-. According to the Guatemalan Tourism Institute -Inguat-, Antigua Guatemala, Sacatepéquez, was the most visited place in the country during Holy Week.
As a positive result for the tourism sector during Holy Week, the Department of Research and Market Analysis announced the most popular places during this holiday.
Antigua Guatemala reported 1,630,302 visitors, representing 52% of the total number of visitors to the country.
Other popular places include:
- Retalhuleu, with 418,922 visits
- Quetzaltenango, with 295,359 visits
- Pacific beaches, with 229,870 visits
- Izabal, with 176,415 visits
- Atitlán, with 141,206 visits
- Las Verapaces, with 72,388 visits
- Esquipulas, with 72,060 visits
- Petén, with 69,658 visits

Additionally, Inguat underscored that from April 1 to 9, the tourist flow reached 2,971,889 visits by domestic tourists and 134,291 international visits.
Records show that international visits mainly came from El Salvador, accounting for 53% of the total. According to preliminary data from the Department of Research and Market Analysis, they were followed by the United States with 16% and Honduras with 10%..
As a result of the tourism flow, the sector generated an economic revenue of roughly
USD 324 million during Holy Week.
Clean Spaces
Among the actions promoted by Inguat to maintain the country’s tourist attractions in good condition was the delivery of items to carry out cleaning campaigns, both before and after Holy Week, in 18 departments.
The items that were delivered included:
- Liquid soap
- Detergent
- Brooms
- Gloves
- Rakes
- Sacks
These actions allowed the cleaning of 186 tourist attractions, including community, municipal, and brotherhood sites.
All of this contributed to visitors having a pleasant experience and finding the spaces attractive and in good condition.
Religious Activities
Another action implemented by Inguat was promoting the digital guide for Holy Week, called El Pregón. This guide contains information on the main activities of Lent and Holy Week, with historical data on processions in:
- Guatemala City
- Antigua Guatemala
- Quetzaltenango
- Totonicapán
- Alta Verapaz
The national and international promotion of this guide resulted in a total of 8,146 online downloads.
Inguat also highlighted its participation in creating the traditional carpet made in Guatemala City.
As a result, this work consisted of 354 meters representing the cultural diversity of Guatemala, especially the religious values that prevail during the season.
