Regarding the recent statements made by Colombian President, Gustavo Petro, on an investigation conducted by the Public Ministry of Guatemala involving the former head of the International Commission Against Impunity in Guatemala -CICIG-, Ivan Velasquez, President Alejandro Giammattei has stated that he is respectful of the separation of powers, and therefore, if there is any difference between nations, it should be solved through diplomatic channels.

Likewise, President Giammattei emphasized that during his administration, the independence of the powers of the State has been ensured, which entails absolute respect for the decisions of judges and magistrates.

Similarly, the Guatemalan president emphasized that such actions are an investigation process,  not a criminal prosecution, which should be considered.

“Guatemala reaffirms its respect for democratic institutions, the rule of law, and the separation of powers and calls for the matter to be resolved through diplomatic channels and dialogue,” said President Alejandro Giammattei.

The Relations between Guatemala and Colombia

The fraternal relationship between Guatemala and Colombia dates back almost 200 years, which has benefited both nations.

As a result of the statements issued by the Colombian President, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs -Minex- has expressed its position through a press release. In it, Minex “regrets that the Government of Colombia is turning a legal issue into a political one, making abrupt decisions without following the corresponding diplomatic procedures”.

Accordingly, Guatemala’s diplomatic position remains respectful of democratic institutions and the rule of law and calls for resolution through dialogue.

Guatemalan Ambassador in Colombia

In response, the administration of President Giammattei removed the ambassador of Guatemala in Colombia, Reagan Vega.  She is expected to travel within the next 48-72 hours, considering the procedure required by the case, which should also be the case with Colombian diplomacy.

This decision resulted from President Petro’s abrupt choices because, with his statements, he demonstrated the opposite of a good relationship, one that has existed over the years between both nations.
